Rich Text / Quicktag Buttons ... Upgrade Link In Admin? (19 posts)

I'm still trying to restore the Quicktag edit buttons to all of our blogs.

Scared of what may happen, I want to ask what "may" happen if I choose to use the "Upgrade" link in the WPMU admin area. I'm referring to the "Upgrade Site" link under the "Site Admin" and "Upgrade" menus, but I don't want to click it unless I'm sure I won't screw all the blogs up. :o)

Any suggestions on that, or how to get back to the edit buttons above the Post textarea in the blogs?

    Thanks.

Back after a few weeks off :o)

Exactly the same problems as I've been having... upgrading everything doesn't solve it either (but doesn't do anything bad either).

I've been trying to fix it and here are some things that I've found out:

-It's nothing to do with hosting providers, I've clean installed the latest nightly and tinymce (the text editor) works fine on that ... so I'm guessing that it's something to do with previou installations that have been upgraded

-It's nothing to do with overwriting files in an upgrade... I've clead deleted wp-admin and wp-includes and reuploaded but to no effect

-It's also accompanied by a few other things going missing / a bit askew, for example the 'hide/open' crossesnext to write post have also gone , as has the WordPress badge on the login screen

    -It's not browser related

So... what I'm thinking is that this is something to do with older versions that have been upgraded ommitting certain images or functions.

Which is pretty much where I'm stuck!

As are the, um couple of thousand bloggers that I'm hosting!!!

(teach me not to go extending meself like this ;)

Any help / thoughts from people in teh know would really help me sleep better :o)

    Cheers, James

    Thanks, James.

I guess no one else has any ideas about why the problem is occuring. Bummer.

Well, maybe some future upgrades will do the trick. The users are really getting frustrated with the lack of simple markup tools. I fear it will diminish their enthusiasm to post and use the platform.

I'll add this ... if anyone is willing to look at the site and try and help, it will be greatly appreciated by many many people. You'll be a hero! :o)

you may contact me here, please.

Do you mean the edit buttons that are now below the post area when "Use the visual rich editor when writing" is unchecked? Do your users maybe just need to check that checkbox in Options / Personal?

You definitely should use the area in the admin panel to upgrade all the blogs as it is possible the option for Use the visual rich editor when writing was added after you last upgraded the DB and since you installed the latest nightly?

They are not above or below any of our textarea boxes and "Editing: Use the visual rich editor when writing" is checked. So, that's not the problem.

I will update and see what happens, but I fear the results.

    What browser?

OK, did the upgrade and and even unchecked the "Editing: Use the visual rich editor when writing" box and updated. Then rechecked it and updated. No luck.

The editing tools such as bold, emphasis/italics, blockquote, etc... none of the tools show up above or below the edit areas.

Thanks. Just sent you an email back and also wrote to the server's owner. I doubt you'll hear back in so short a time, though.

Still, I do appreciate your offer to help. Thanks.

Yep looks like a .htaccess problem, take a look at htaccess.dist in the current nightly build and compare it to your .htaccess, now it will likely look different as htaccess.dist will have BASE all through it but you should have a line like:

    `RewriteRule ^wp-includes/js/(.*) /wp-inst/wp-includes/js/$1 [L]'

You could also be missing others as well.

I'm signing off for the night now but I am fairly confident that is the issue, for your reference I just made available a copy of my .htaccess file that works for the most part (I think imports and the new image stuff needs some work still) at:

Thank you, jaseone. I appreciate the help.

Unless Farms sees this and uses the suggestion to attempt a fix, I think I'll take your .htaccess file and compare it to - use it for - ours and see if that does the trick. But, I'll do it tomorrow 'cause I'm so tired I don't want to mess something up right now.

    Thank you.

Just got up and that kicks ass! I owe you a serious beer jaseone!!!

All I've done is backup my old .htaccess (9kb for some reason???) and copy over jaseone's one from here:

    http://www.911blogs.com/wp-inst/my_htaccess.txt

formatting is there, images work better and everything seems to be cool... guess I'll be able to report back on any more issues if bug reports come in from users.

For the record that's with the 10-04 nightly release.

Great fix guys + jaseone... YOU DA MAN!!!

More testing and everything seems to be going great... the one oddity is that some 'img src's I've got in the template I use for the homepage aren't appearing.

Perhaps about time I started trying to learn something about .htaccess stuff I think!

Are the images outside of the WPMU file structure? For anything static you want to try to put it in a separate directory and then do something like in the previous thread about images not showing.

Glad you got it working. :)

By the way htaccess.dist is another file you should watch in the changelog as if that changes then you need to edit your own .htaccess as well.

    Thank you jaseone and farms!

That did the trick for us. All the wonderous edit functions have returned. We are very grateful! :)

I like the new drag-n-drop photo upload tool, too.

As farms and I discussed, the support from these forums is greatly appreciated. Many, many thanks!

I second farms endorsement - "jaseone... YOU DA MAN!!!"

    All the best.

This .htaccess (jaseone) doesn't work for me - if you try and browse to the picture url directly, you still just get redirected to the blog main page.

    Any more ideas??!

    Thanks
    James
