No disrespect intended but have you read the page they're pointing you to?

yup, even sent them an email. the page is pretty unclear about what I might be doing wrong.

Do a search here for the smtp plugin. You may have to use that instead of the php mailer.

thanks, that was a good tip. It passed the gmail test. I need to test on yahoo. I route through gmail smtp and it goes ok. One tiny thing, yahoo might not like, reply-to: and from: are not equal. From is my gmail address and reply-to is the user email address on the server. odd. I wonder were I can configure that.

I have set up both yahoo mail and googl email accounts to do a test run and both of my emails got through and were activated.
I am using php mailer, but I have put in in plugins and not mu plugins as I couldn't get it to work in the mu plugins.
I have used the same email address as my site admins.
I don't know if this is a security risk by placing it in the plugins, it means php mailer is in all blogs.

I don't think that's teh cause as most mailing lists are like that. Replies (and bounces) get put into a different email box.
