You can add widgets to your setup and then just add widgets for that. I think thats what I am going to have to do.
widgets, or you can enable the theme editor. use at your own risk.
Do NOT enable the theme editor. There's ONE theme for *every* user that chooses it. If one user hard-codes soemthing in a theme, it will show up for ALL users who picke dthat theme.
Get the widgets plugin.
Any extra code users will need will already have a widget (you may need to hunt for specific ones) or they may be able to paste code (like webrings) into a text widget.
Enabling the theme editor would be bad....
Imagine 5 different users editing the same thing, and then the security risks would be a nightmare.
Basic HTML not working in a text widget?
because i have so few users - 35 - i've begun copying themes, renaming them and disabling them for other users. i have or 3 people who wanted sports tickers which used object tags which get eaten by Mu. i trust them. but i dont have the theme editor in the admin bar, they have to type the full address, etc, etc.
To answer the question though, the system is stripping out all javascripts, iframes, and whatnot for security purposes as they would allow a hacker to signup for your mu install, use one of their tricks ans gain access to your files or the box via one of those scripts.
so here's something i've been working on to no avail - i am trying to take one of the the RSS widgets and hard code the javascript into it rather than my users trying to use script in a text widget. basically, i wanna turn an RSS widget into a sports ticker/ score board whereas a person can enter the feed for whatever stat theyre following and get the right formating and animations. the feeds work in the RSS widgets just fine, but you lose the formatting and the ticker effects. i dont see why it wouldnt work, but my copy-paste skills leave a lot to be desired. i'll have it ironed out in a decade or so. until then, i allow some trusted people to hack their own sidebars.
I have downloaded widgets.1.2.1 but it doesn't work, i have mu 1.0 version. Can you give me the exactly plugin?
I want to give users a chance to add their their google adsense codes, or other type of services codes.
"I have downloaded widgets.1.2.1 but it doesn't work, i have mu 1.0 version. Can you give me the exactly plugin?"
uh, it *does* work. especially considering the plugin was written by the same guys who wrote MU. So maybe you can tell us exactly how it didn't work for you.
when i activated it, their war an error.
What *kind* of error? What did it say? I can't see your screen. :)
andrea_r first of all, please tell me, when i install this widget, will users be able to add html codes or text they need in side bar without any problem?
THanks :)
Basic HTML, yes. NOT Javascript or Php, or whatever.
You'll have to TRY it to see if it does what you want. If not, you'll have to find a widget that does, or write one.
Make sure you've also grabbed the widget version for 2.1 as the 2.0 does not in fact work on WPMu.
Londona, you need to provide a lot more detail to your issue. Please remember that only you can see what is occuring and you're the only one who can give specifics. For example, how did you install all? Specifics would help.
Demon, what javascript are you trying to hard code it? Gotta admit that I just usally take a simple widget and edit one of those. The RSS widgets are kind of full of stuff that you might not need.
Doc,
i'm looking for either one of two things, i would either like to be able to edit the was the feed is displayed i.e. if i entered 'nba.com/score/rss' i would like to control if it scrolls up or down, forwards or back, etc. this would be easiest. my users could enter the feed they want and get scoreboards. less work for me beyond hacking the widget
or, if i simple created an individual widget for every sports to display stats in a similar fashion to what you see on sporting news stations.
the problem is that online news ticker services all use object tags or javascript tags. i'm looking for a way around that.
I think what drmike is suggesting is to take one of those online news ticker services javascript and make it into a widget.
i got you. i've been looking at this from the wrong end.
thanks!
i know some other people thought about this too. so if i get it working, i'll post the results.

You need to mod some code of text widget or wait for next version of widget. Check how to mod here:

With this plugin, you can add anything you want unfiltered in the sidebar…of course AT YOUR OWN RISK, wrong code may break you page and even bring in vulnerabilities.
