I thought I was getting poor response times from my site but a friend then pointed me to http://www.websitepulse.com/help/testtools.website-test.html

which allows you to test your server response time.

It reported the following for me:

    Test performed from: Munich, Germany
    Test performed at: 2007-05-24 08:09:30 (GMT -04:00)
    Status: OK
    Response Time: 2.056 sec
    DNS: 0.506 sec
    Connect: 0.040 sec
    First byte: 0.499 sec
    Last byte: 1.010 sec
    Size: 15181 bytes

Does that seem a reasonable set of figures? The DNS looks a bit on the slow side to me and the First Byte time seems rather slow too.

Re-running it got the DNS time to a slightly lower value but the first byte time was still high

It could be lower, but things like this depend on a lot of different variables.

My server is in Detroit. Here are my results:

    Test performed from: Munich, Germany
    Test performed at: 2007-05-24 10:24:19 (GMT -04:00)
    Status: OK
    Response Time: 1.269 sec
    DNS: 0.289 sec
    Connect: 0.121 sec
    First byte: 0.327 sec
    Last byte: 0.532 sec
    Size: 6717 bytes

    Second try:

    Test performed from: Munich, Germany
    Test performed at: 2007-05-24 10:27:36 (GMT -04:00)
    Status: OK
    Response Time: 0.697 sec
    DNS: 0.001 sec
    Connect: 0.121 sec
    First byte: 0.331 sec
    Last byte: 0.244 sec
    Size: 6717 bytes

I don't think .697 round trip to Germany is too bad.

talk to your hosting provider if you're on shared hosting. Find out what your CPU/Memory load looks like, reduce the number of queries, try changing your home page theme to a less graphics intense and item-rich website.

    That's the most I can recommend. :)

Yah, I guess I should have noted I'm on my own box and I keep loads down down down. Your responses on a shared server will vary.
