In my WPMU site, when I create password protection using htaccess in a folder, it returns 404 error. Someone told me that problem is my main htaccess file conflicts with htaccess in a folder and redirects it. How do I fix this problem?

Are you editing the .htaccess manually or using a control panel to do it?

You probably need to specify certain error documents in your main htaccess file.
I can't remember off the top of my head which error codes they are, but searching the main WP site should get you headed in the right direction.
This is something that has been an issue with WP for quite a while, but I can't remember if it was in their forum or through google where I found the answer at the time. It's been probably close to 18 months or better since I last looked.
