I'm trying to install WordPressmu via CPanel and keep hitting a wall with this error message:

ERROR: could not open .htaccess for writing

    htaccess.dist
    uid/gid: 32184/32185
    size: 378
    perms: 0644
    readable: yes
    writeable: no

    .htaccess
    uid/gid: 32184/32185
    size: 0
    perms: 0777
    readable: yes
    writeable: yes

    Help!!!

Talk to your host. They appear to have safemode on.

    Well, that didn't help either.

What the f*** is wrong with this?

I've set the htaccess and htaccess.dist permissions to 777, done every last thing Ive been told to do, and I either get that error or this one:

No WPMU site defined on this host. If you are the owner of this site, please check Debugging WPMU for further assistance.

I click the Debugging WPMU link and it doesn't explain anything very well.

And no search of these forums finds anything that's helpful. I've spent hours on this and am about to ditch wordpress and go with movabletype.

So does your host have safemode on or not? It should be turned off. I believe CPanel defaults to having it turned on.

The debugging wpmu link is a series of question for you to respond to and post here.

Please make sure that you have this fix installed:

I just have one thing to say about movable type and that is I've used it and I spent a lot more time cursing than I did installing wordpress! Im still having issues with my MU install, but heck, its part of the process. Stop freaking.

I have had this problem with my cpanel install.

You have to give the .htaccess full write permissions, e.g chmod 777. Do this from your ftp contraol panel (I use WS ftp).

    This fixed it for me.

@ peaforabrain - thanks! My cPanel and .htaccess were giving me grief, too. I changed the permissions as you described and everything was trouble free from there on out. Hours of frustration ended!

Just to throw this in, some cpanel setups won't allow you to delete a htaccess file. If you have one of those, just set it to a 666 permission. (Yo may have to get your host to do that for you.)
