I just installed word press on our Xserve and I am able to get to at :

    http://localhost:8888/wordpress/

But how do I get to it off the Xserve and on another computer on our network or outside our network?

using a webserver on an xserve? Didn't think it could be done. (I have three I'm using as backupservers.)

You have to adjust it to be localhost.localdomain. Do a search as it's been much dicussed in the past.

And you can't run mu on anything but port 80. It's hardcoded that way.

That's been covered as well. Donncha provided a link I believe on how to setup MAMP correctly for port 80.

Anyway of setting it up so people can get to it by typing

    Within the network?

You should be running some sort of domain network controler. Should be able to add it in there. (I don't know your network. I can't give details.)

Here's one of the threads on Mamp for you to read. It includes a link to a tutorial:

Can an XServe do Apache? Oh, hell yeah Doc. :D

Granted, it's like a pickup bed on a freightliner. ;)

I haven't really messed with mine. At $15k+ to start with and $1.2k a year for management a pop, I didn't want to break anything. :)

Yes, I did the service contract. I wanted to make sure that the automatted backups worked.

I will agree that they are not cheap.

You know though, other than being in a tower, a MacPro can make a nice server too and for less than an XServe. :D

Yeah, but each of my xserves have 14 drives in them. :)

And with 10.5, it looks like ZFS may be an option for the file system. I just read a huge frickin thread (mostly full of idiots) about it.

If is proves true, mass storage just took a shot of super-crack.

yeah, if ZFS can actually live up to what people have been saying then it's going to be my choice for mass storage.

Does anyone here know if the new MacBook Pros will be using ZFS or only the XServes?

Nothing on it yet. Gotta wait to see if Steve talks about it Monday in the keynote at WWDC.

I would venture to speculate that it will be an option in 10.5, that could be used on whatever and not just server.

Granted, with only a single drive the advantages aren't quite as beneficial, although it's still better than hfs+ hands down.

I'm getting ready to drop on a 17" MBP myself. Add in 2x2GB from crucial, and all will be well for a while. :)

I've put off purchasing a MacBook Pro since january so i'm more than ready for the new models to be available.

I'm also toying with the idea of getting an XServe to replace my aging network storage devices. I have ~750GB of storage spread over three NAS devices and i'm really getting tired of having to look on all three devices when I need to find something.

Um, the new models came out last Tuesday. ;)

Was a pretty decent upgrade as well. Whole line starts with 2G of RAM, so that's cool. The only thing I noticed was bumping up the HD to the 7200RPM option pushed out delivery to 4-6 weeks.

4x500GB in a MacPro wouldn't cut it? Might curb some costs, even in the 8-core. (Which screams, BTW. :D)

Huh, you're right, they're available. How did I miss that? Who cares, where's the credit card...

He he he he. Same thing I said, then I figured I should at least wait until after the Keynote tomorrow (10am PDT, 1pm EDT) to just "make sure" there isn't something sneaky up Steve's sleeve.
