LoL - there were quite a few snags I ran into while setting it up, and you know most of them were solved just by looking for any post that had drmike in them and I got the answers. If only people would read, search and follow the instructions then we would all be setting up sites without too much problems.

    :)

Ah. Well, this is encouraging. So, you just installed and it worked straightaway - even in IE? Where are you hosting? Did you not encounter the 404 error when users try to login to create a blog? Don't say search the forums - I've been searching for a week solid. All I can find on this topic are questions, not answers. Would love some direction.

Best answer: Make sure you have enough resources available.

Which means a solid server, plenty of memory, and the mem default in php.ini bumped up to at least 16M vice the default 8M.

Mail me and I will let you have some of my Hosting ;)

But I think there is a list of some great hosts that work well here somewhere on the forum :) Maybe I go add mine :) or just mail me and I send you a quote.

Lunabyte: I just have on question: if everything is working hunky dory in safari and firefox, just not in IE (see the thread on 404 errors in explorer) what would the server, emory or memory default have to do with it? Would that be different for the different browsers? Thanks.

I work on IE all the time, and now and then on fireFox, only problem I get on IE sometimes is the css going all wonky, and maybe the upload of profile photos if you have the profile thingy loaded.

No, server specs doesn't affect IE.

IE being a P.O.S. that can't draw its way out of a paper bag is the problem there.

I personally refuse to use it, and windows right along with it, so I'll cut my reply here.

Hi Lunabyte: well, I certainly agree with you, but I cannot control what my useres use, and guess what - 82% of them are on IE, so you can't hold that attitude if you are working with a customer - focused site. Any other suggestions other than ordering my customers, who won't be if I cannot support them on ie, not to use it?

mornebeel: would you let me know, if you can, what modifications you made to your pages that allow people to create their own blogs in mu.wordpress when they are using ie? Tks

MU, by default works with IE. If an individual theme isn't hacked to work in IE, that isn't MU's fault.

I've got users that sign-up with IE just fine.

And, for the record, I never said order your "customers" to not use it. I said ME personally.

Believe me, coding and designing for a living I'm quite aware of how many people still use that POS blindly, and I curse it every time I have to hack special CSS for it because of it.

agreed. 3/4's of the bloggers on my site are buddies of mine... when i go to their houses all i see is IE. i've even gotten around to surreptitiously disabling IE and installing firefox with an IE7 theme. no dice. every 3 months, i make the rounds uninstalling malware and formatting drives. how many times does a guy need to get burned by his browser before he tries something else? to my horror, my site doesnt display the same in FF, IE6 and IE7. i'm still working on validation. once its validated, if it still looks chewed up in IE6, fuggit.

    judyschmitz: Hi there,
I have made absolutely no modifications to the code, I downloaded the code from the download link here on the site. Unzipped it to my desktop, ftp'd it to my hosting server, then as per all the instruction loaded it. Then again as per the instruction I modified the httpd.conf then i logged on to my site and it just worked.
Then when I started pooting all the fun stuff onto my blog-site that's when I started visiting this here great forum for the answers. There are stilll a few small things at my site that don't work but i'm sure if I ask nicely here I will get all them answers.

I have no experience coding with PHP have pretty much no clue about MySql - so in my opinion most people should be able to set this up by simlpy following the instructions.

I almost excusively use IE (ver7 btw) and have minor problems to date.... Only time I use firefox is to update profile pic for the profile plugin - probably a fix for that here too :) My suggestion is get a good hosting server for your blog, upload everything then do all the prep things before logging in for the first time, ie, choose all the plugins, widgets etc then I believe you should have no problems.

If all else fails wire me $10000 and I do it for you ;)

HI All: Lunabyte: I am using the default theme, no modifications or plugins at all, so thats not it. If you look at the thread on IE and 404s you'll see its not working for a lot of people. On different hosting providers, in diferent countries.

I have installed wordpress over 40 times, no problems at all, and the MU install is easy, thats not the problem. If you take a look at this particular issue, you'll see I'm not the only one.

Ive asked DRMIKE if there is a fix that I don't know about but haven't heard. What theme are you using, maybe if I switch to it it will work!

I wrote my own "home" theme.

But, is what you're saying is that yourdomain.tld/wp-signup.php is not accessible in IE?

I think we covered that in the other thread.

I can't dupe this error on my own installs. I'm at a loss.

    Donncha?

Dunno if this might help, by default I put this in all the sites I design.

It's a png fix for IE, but for some strange reason I have found that it solves some other problems too. it goes into the header of your theme. with a reference to a js file that does the fixing

    	<!--[if lt IE 7.]>
    	<script defer type="text/javascript" src="inc/js/pngfix.js"></script>
    	<![endif]-->

You can get the js here here :)

If you use transparent PNG's in your design, yes that helps.

I will note though, that I've found 7's support for transparent PNG's to not be exactly "reliable", and also tend to include a js fix for 7 as well.

p.s. This isn't relevant to the actual problem.

It still sounds like a path error or something to me.

if it was a path error, would it work in firefox?

    Here:

knitbloggers.com.... try it in firefox..works fine, safari, fine, .... try it in IE. Everyone seems to be stumped. Im using the default install...no theme, modification or path changes.

heres the admin login - see what you can see. I've done multiple installs, happens eachtime. Wp-login.php works, so why not sign-up.com!!

    login: admin
    pw: 12345678

    Tks

ps I'll try the fix above and see if it helps

judyschmitz: This is fascinating -- it's not just Internet Explorer (6 in my case) that gives a 404, it is also wget. But not curl. Can you post your .htaccess file and see if your web host is running mod_security or another similar module? I'm fairly stumped at this point, there isn't anything obvious in your site admin that seems like it would possibly make a difference... Even better, could you stick an info.php file in your base WPMU directory with the single line

    <?php phpinfo(); ?>
    in it?

Hi dsilverman! I love that you use the word fascinating...that gives me hope!

Ok, I will post my htacess file here ---I 'll check host - but remember, that a lot of other people are getting this at multiple hosts....I'm totally game to try another host just for the heck of it though. Any recommendations. I'll put the info.php file up there too....just give me an hour or so, I have to get caffeinated first :)

Oh, you host with GoDaddy. I wonder if other people who were having this problem were also hosting with GoDaddy. Ick.

if you look on the other thread, you'll see it's not godaddy - people at multiple hosts are having it - if it was godaddy, why would it work in some browsers not others? What is the difference.

I k now lots of people have ICK with godaddy - I've had multiple icks with every other host ive used so There you go.
