Problem pointing domain to multiblog (14 posts)

    Hello,
I wanted to host multiple blogs on one root website through the use of domain pointers. Thing is, when I try pointing one of my domains (e.g. example.com) to the subdirectory of my root blog (e.g. this.com/example) it won't work. I know it is because WPMU does not exactly use sub directory folders but then how can I possibly point my domains?

Thanks for taking your time to help me.

Search the forums for domain mapping.

Thanks for the tip. However, from what I read, those issues are about Parking Domains, I want to point the domain so that it acts as its own. So instead of having example.com/this/2007/06/15 it can become this.com/2007/06/15

umm... that essentially is domain parking. I'm assuming you want to use domain parking because your using subdirectory install rather than subdomain. It will be much easier with subdomains because your example would be this.example.com/2007/06/15 would then become this.com/2007/06/15.

As far as an answer to your question, there is no easy way to do it other than using a lot of htaccess redirects.

Well, the first time I installed WPMU I did go through the subdomain route but on FTP I cannot see that subdomain folder . So, I reinstalled WPMU to make blogs in subdirectories. I am hosted with Site5 so domain pointers are pointed to subdirectories so I thought that would work but as I stated before, WPMU does not actually use subdirectory folders.

However, if there is a way to do it using htaccess. Do you know how?

The reason you don't see the sub domain folders is because they are virtual sub domain folders. This is designed to keep MU light and fast without cluttering up the web server. You actually don't really need access to those virtual sub domain folders anyways. I highly recommend you try it again with sub domains.

I do not personally know how to do what you're asking for with htaccess. I try to avoid doing redirects there as much as possible because it slows down access.

See, that is the thing. If they are virtual, there is no way that the domain will point to it because it needs a specific folder.

    Um, NO, it doesn't.

Seriously, listen to what people are trying to tell you.

    Use subdomains.

Park the domain in question on top of your account.

    Use the plugin from wpmudev.org.

    Let MU do it's job.

lunabyte, there are reasons why people chose to install WPMU using the subdirectory method. I am one. For good reason. To reinstall using the sub domain method is not a resolution. There have been many posts offering very complex resolutions and we simply need to know what will work. Is there a developer in this forum who can tell us?

Pretty much everyone on this forum is a developer :)

But the question has been answered, twice in this thread.
WPMU sits in A location and looks at all the addresses that the browser sends. It interprets them and gets the right information from the database and displays it with the right theme. That is what it does, that is what it is designed to do.

Why would you want to make directories on your host when your don't need to?

If my main domain is fred.com and I use domain pointing to point "smith.com" to the same location. As long as I tell WPMU (using the domain mapping plugin) that smith.com exists, then it will serve it as well.

Seriously, as @lunabyte says - listen to what people are trying to tell you.

Except the domain mapping plugin from Donncha's doesn't work on subfolder installs. :)

Use the multi-site manager plugin instead.

Is the answer to this question "NO, you can't do that"?

    OR

is no one understanding the question being asked :)

let me ask it another way:

I am using WPMU to host MULTIPLE WEBSITES (ok, technically blogs, but they're functioning as websites) for MULTIPLE CLIENTS. Each client would like their OWN private DOMAIN NAME to point to their MU blog (eg: http://www.domain.com would point to http://domain.WordPressMUsite.com). I know how to do this with a redirect... but is there anyway to do this WITHOUT at redirect or framing?
