We're not all about being greedy capitalist pigs over at WPMUDEV ;) and here's something to prove it, goddamnit.

We give you, ahem, the catchily titled Signup Security Question.

It's pretty simple really, say goodbye to auto-registering splogs by asking a simple question as part of your signup process.

And what makes it extra funky is that it's 'powered by humans' - i.e. you change the question every week or so, and the sploggers aren't going to be bothered to keep up with you.

    Well, that's the theory.

Have a go, whack it in mu-plugins, change the question in Site Admin and let us know.

(BTW it doesn't appear the first time you view the signup page, just refresh).

And so..... this hints that you're going to clean up UniBlogs.org so I can add your "damn" feed back into MuTags.net right?

    ;)

    VB... sheesh!

The thing about a single (or limited number of questions) is that it only takes 1 person to work through the questions and work out the answers and put those into the spam bots and then some stuff is bound to get through

Yep. As bas as it sucks sometimes, a captcha is the most effective method, without having an approval system.

Combined with bad behavior, a spammer has to sit there and literally sign-up.

Sploggers wouldn't be bothering with eslblogs :)

I reckon a number of rotated questions would be good.

"Sploggers wouldn't be bothering with eslblogs :)"

And that why I had to take that feed out of mutags.net for a while? :P lol

Not enough to manually bother... and you can pop the feed back now, it's nice and clean.

Does that mean the quote issue got fixed as well?

The feed messed-up stuff - not really but we're working on that... you'd have to ask Andrew.

I think doc was referring to the site-wide feed, but not really sure...

Ah yes... the quotes turning into all kinds of funky stuff.

    AEtm or some crazy crap.

But, that might be from the sitewide feed or something.

Actually I think the quotes within the feed were causing all those issues with mysql errors with mutags. Probably the content just needs to be run through wp_specialchars or whatever the function call is and puts quote marks into the ascii.

I'm going to try this out.
I had auto-registrations disabled for the longest time. I still had log entries of attempts. after upgrading to the latest, I decided to open up registrations again. had 2 overnight with another one or two that had not been email validated.
I guess let this go for a few days and see if I get any more sploggers.

I just installed it yesterday; usually I get around 10 splogs overnight, but this question brought the number down to 2. So I am pretty happy about that!
