Can I make a theme customizable by users? (6 posts)

    Hi there guys,

We do themes for a lot of clients, and we log into their blog accounts and edit their themes via their admin panel. Recently, we installed wp-mu, and installed some themes, and after looking around, it seems that users can not alter any installed theme(including default), as all users share the same files. It states that we could if the file were writable, but it's a basic css file for the default theme, and neither of us can find anything that would allow a user to customize their blog...

    Can I ask:

    1) Does anyone have it set up where users can user their own header?
    2) If so, how did you do it?

thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to help me.

    thanks,

Anyone? I've had many people state that they wouldn't use a blog system that they couldn't customize to make it their own.

Is it already possible, and I'm just not smart enough to find it, or do all the MU users offer templates with no possibility of customization?

    thanks,

Just for reference, bumping in less than 24 hours is usually considered to be in poor taste on most tech support forums on the net. Here, you owe us a round of Starbucks.

    Custom Headers in Wordpress:

    http://boren.nu/archives/2007/01/07/custom-image-header-api/

Do note that is theme specific and you have to have themes that allow it. It's been discussed before in case you're interested.

The theme files are not editable as you note by the end user. You can edit them yourself if you have file level access via ftp or your host's backend. May want to search the forums as it's been discussed before as well. Some of us have editors for CSS but have no plans on releasing them to the public.

I politely suggest that you may want to brush up on your searching skills.

    Hope this helps,

    1) I apologize for only waiting 20 hours for the bump.
    2) I apologize for not using search terms that would reward me with the information I needed.
    3) I will be sure to purchase some kind of quick reference on how not to search like a complete idiot.
    4) I'm very happy to hear that there are people with the ability to edit their CSS files. I'm even happier to hear that they will not be sharing them with the community.
    5) I thank you very much for all of the links you supplied and the time you took to provide them. I'm sure I will be able to find something that will either solve my problem or let me know that I'm wasting my time.

[EDIT]I will be happy to provide the coffee, but unless you're close by, it's bound to be a little on the strong side when it gets to you :)[/EDIT]

    thanks,

Not a problem. The custom headers went over big around here.

Take a look at the links at teh boren site as he points you towards the Automattic SVN where you can get some themes to start you off that already have the custom header uploader thingie.

search userthemes... its badass. my inbox has saved. my users remind me of the people who push the elevator button a thousand times hoping it'll move faster. i, however, move on C-P time. so i tossed the Userthemes plugin at them and said 'TAKE THE FARKIN STAIRS! THIS IS A FREE SITE..^%@#$!&*^&'

sorry. long day. i could use that starbucks right now.
