WordPress MU

Hi!
I want to create WordPressMU system. I saw that every new blog, adds a few more tables in db (with a new serial prefix wp_#_ ). Why? Is it more effecient? If I expect to more than 3000 blogs in my system,isn't it more effecient to hold the blogs in some general connected tables, instead of savind so many many tables??
