Moving Normal Wordpress Blogs to MU, Host Change (9 posts)

This might seem a bit complicated.

I have some blogs running a copy of Wordpress each on subdomains of domain1.com on a old host.

Now I want to move them all to a brand new Wordpress MU installation to a new host but I want to use the same domain1.com on it. I already have the account for domain1.com in the new host.

I thought the best way to import the blogs into MU would be the import feature. But since the nameserver needs to be pointing to the new host also it's getting confusing.

Should I attempt MU installation on the new host with the server IP address and then import? If so what would be the IP address I'd use for the FTP transfer? Will it just be the server IP? (Didn't work.)

No, don't try it like that.

What you can do, is edit your local hosts file to point domiain1.com to the new ip address.

Which won't affect anyone other than yourself, and you'll be able to run a normal install and such.

If you setup some blogs, you will also have to add those to your hosts file as well.

If you're not up to speed on editing your local hosts file, google will show you the way.

Alright the install went fine. Now I want to create a blog blog1.domain.com and import the posts and comments from the real blog1.domain.com. How can I do this?

Ther's an export function in the simple WP, and an import funxtion in MU, but that's broken. And that's where I got stuck too... :-(

Those blogs are rather hold and can't export to that special XML file. Is there any other way other than upgrading them and then exporting?

Not really, as there would/could be some big issues between versions.

Upgrade them to the latest 2.2 version of WP first, so that it matches the current version of WP that MU is built on.
