How long/many users (estimate) will 1.6 GB support? (13 posts)

My shared host allows for (50) 100 MB MySQL databases. I've seen the fix for multiple databases, up to 16. That will give me a total of 1.6GB How big can I get? How many users do you estimate that will support?

You'll get kicked off the host before you get that big.

The gigs of space are a non-issue. Even if you use multiple dbs on shared, it only buys you a bit of time. What's the max sql connections? Shared hosts have that cranked down.

Realistically, you can probably get up to a couple hundred or so, with a few dozen regular posters, before things get dicey. But it's a big risk.

I've got a near-bottom-line package from here and was using 10% of the space, half the resources, with just one MU install. Now I've got more on the box and I'm still not running out.

Look for memory, that's what MU eats for breakfast. :) Get 256k or 512 to start.

FWIW, I get a million hits a month on average and have a few hundred users, with a fair number of regular bloggers. There's been a few hundred posts in the last week alone, with over a thousand comments site-wide in the last week, and over a 150 blogs updated in the past month. Server resources have hardly blipped. They've used a half a gig of space on me though. :D They like to take loads of pics. (other tip? Use the "resize images on uploads" hack here in the forum)

Also, my MySQL disk space uses up over 200 gigs, and we've used over 3 gigs of b/w on that MU install alone.

And there's six other sites on the server (in that VPS account) as well.

Tip: if you're going for VPS or dedicated, it'll work with just about anything 100% when you tweak it to your liking.

Do NOT get a Windows server. That's all. :D

I assume that was a typo and you mean 200mb? :-)

nopes i think andrea is rite with the 200 gigs thing...
i've reached 50 mb or so with just 4-5 active blogs(around 200 blogs including those marked as spams and the ones that are inactive) and with roughly some 100-150 posts and 50 odd comments

so i guess she must have reached that figure

    Doh! :D
    MySQL Disk Space 204.45 Megabytes

Megs, not gigs. :D I will note we are judicious in cleaning out spam comments, splogs, optimizing and clearing unused tables & overhead. We don't have a lot of extra plugins that add loads of things to the db, but we plan on it.

I can also recommend Future Hosting. Their VPS packages are priced just right for dev sites.

    Thanks,
    Andrew
