The MU forums have moved to WordPress.org

1 standard button on all blogs, leading to community site (11 posts)

On my http://www.coffeennews.com site I want to install the boonex Dolphin community software, to of course have a community in addition to what is there. It seems like a good all-round package, pretty complete and intuitive.

I would like a button linking to that to appear standard in every blog being created, in the top menu bar. I am using the NewYorker-30 template, and the only way I can see adding buttons in there is when I add them as pages of Wordpress MU, and I would need to do that for every blog. There must be some way I can achieve this?

Thanks for all your help, and if anyone has any experience/comments/hints on the Boonex Dolphin software, I would love to hear it.

sorry bruh, youre gonna have to add this in every theme. maybe you could write a plugin that hooks into the footer and then position it with CSS like the admin bar. but i can't think of a way offhand to add a menu item to every blog by default. hopefully one of the true coders will sound off on this because i'd love to know how to do it too.

    ==edit==
thinking about it, hacking the admin bar plugin will prolly be your best bet, i think. are you planning to share databases, too.?

I was going to suggest using the admin bar plugin and adding the link to that.

    Otherwise? Each and every theme.

Hardcode it into the template, if all blogs use the same theme.

    Hi dutchy4c,
    How did you get on?

Interested as we're looking to swith from Dolphin to WordPress MU because of the security headache that is Dolphin.

    Love to hear your experiences.

Will WPMU really replace Dolphin for ya? :)
Dolphin is loaded with tons of features especially if you also use Ray and Orca.

You can try WPMU and BuddyPress, but migration of your existing users and stuff will be not that easy...

I know it's a bit offtopic, but what 'security headache' you have with Dolphin?

    Thanks VentureMaker,

Yep I know Dolphin (plus Ray & Orca) is stuffed with features but we have had no end of problems with people hacking the mails sends, bot spamming the guest books and generally making a nuisance of themselves all over the place. The Dolphin community are fairly well set up to offer hints and advice, but we are hoping to avoid these by using WPMU. Have seen some very good work being done with WPMU (http://explorewithme.com/) and thought we'd explore further.

I know you'll probably say we should expect security issue and ring fence the server better but we're just average Joes trying to build communities not Dark Lord security experts.

It's not so much a problem with Dolphin, more that people seem to enjoy hacking it.

We ported from Xoops to Dolphin a couple of years back and ended up manually downloading, reformatting and uploading the tables that time. So I guess that's my days gone for a while again.

    Thanks D ;)

    Thanks, Dave

The reason of asking is that I'm choosing a good social networking platform for one of my projects.

    I was considering Dolphin+Ray+Orca and Elgg. Now, I guess, I've made a choice :)

BTW, sad thing... Dolphin looks&feels great in terms of features available, but fails when it comes to 'everyday issues'.

    You're welcome VentureMaker,

It's worth doing a search on security in the Boonex forums.

We will push ahead with our investigation into WPMU and I'll post the site if we do move over.

Thanks again for your assistance. I might post the same question in a new topic as we seem to have drifted here.

Oh, and if you do find the perfect platform please feel free to share it ;)

    Cheers
    Dave

I'll give Elgg a test-drive and will let you know.
How can I reach you by email, cause it's not the right topic to post here ;)

Would be interested to hear - dave@printbynet.net.

Oh, as a foot note, looks like dutchy4c never made it back from the mission as his site is bouncing to a nasty ad site!
