WordPress MU

Ok. I've tried everything I can think of. Here's my scenario, then you can tell me if you need anything more to help- Apache 1.3.33 running on Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger), PHP 4, and mysql. I know these components are functioning. At least, mostly. I installed WPMU, and it's hit or miss. If I bring uo the main page, sometimes I get a 403 forbidden, sometimes the page comes through. Beyond that, I can't go anywhere. If I wait long enough, the sign in page will load. And by that, I mean waiting a few hours. I'm stumped. Tell me what you would need to give advice. So it's a local install? Yes, no? Domain name?

Ok. Non local install. It's on a server located within reach, but not this machine. The domain is tricky. I had to set the hosts file in my machine until our network services group registers the cname. The machine is currently host to another blog server, at http://applemedia.nova.edu
This will be on that server, but as a VHOST. I think it may come down to my VHOST settings. But, again, I'm not positive. So please, bear with me on this.
