Wordpress MU as a CMS for university design portfolio site

Our university department wants to have a sub-site that includes a blog for the department plus links to sub-blogs that are needed to be used as product design portfolio sites for the students.

er... is it possible? blog per student, with loads of plugins that involve sexy ways of portraying jpg's and flash documents that students can update and change on their own. plus a separate blog with separate branding and plugins for the department itself.

all totally integrated? any thoughts?

I believe it's possible. You use the main WPMU site for the Department's blog and site and then you use subsites (either subdomain or subdirectory) for students and customize a theme to fit your needs. You can enable the necessary plugins and grant the students author privileges only so they can't change themes or modify plugins.
