Over at http://thoughts.com, the middle box which is "News". Is that a plugin or js? Can anyone explain how they did that? I have sent them an email asking.

Well, since it appears that thoughts.com doesn't run WordPress (mu or su), I'm guessing it's custom code. I didn't look to see if it's done by javascript or not, but I'm guessing it's server side code.

That middle bit is done using DOM tabs. There's more and more WP themes coming out with them. google will help. :)
And yes, the site is not using MU but rather a different (probably paid) software.
