Wordpress MU is a great work-in-progress, and it's fun to watch its development by downloading a new nightly once a month or so. But the homepage nor downloads page really doesn't mention this is not a production-ready piece of software. Lots of stuff remains broken and running any kind of multi-blog, multi-user system requires lots of dedication to getting it to work (even with some basic functionality). I know, I spent a week wrangling with it...

It would be nice if someone posted once in awhile to the Dev Blog (why is the link there if nobody uses it?), and if it could be better highlighted that this project is nowhere nearly as polished as the regular WP project (which I use on multiple sites, so I had assumed MU was similar or the same).

Sorry folks, just believe that folks need to know before going down this road....

Could you be more specific concerning the general problems you experienced ?

We are thinking about using this software, and so far we haven't gotten any big issues while testing it ...

I am testing it right now and even the install breaks with newer versions of PHP... The whole mod_rewrite thing is annoying me because it checks for it and fails even though it is there and working. We have gone to pLog for now because of the problems that we have had getting it installed. It doesn't seem to like PHP5... :) That is all I have noticed to this point that is problematic...

I must admin, I like wpmu's potential, but after months of trying I still can not get it installed and working properly. Even if I do get it now, when it would be time to upgrade I would be weary about making any type of changes. \

I hope sometime this project matures into something that is stable and usable.

Ballen and everyone: what are the permissions of the htaccess.dist file? I'm going to modify the index.php on Monday so that it warns if it can't read the htaccess.dist file.
I'd really appreciate if you could help debug this by looking at the do_htaccess() routine and get this working! This part of the install has always worked perfectly on every machine I've tried it on so I need your help to get it working on your machines!
