Wild Card Problem (20 posts)

    Hi all,

I am having a problem with my wildcards, I am using shared hosting with a control panel
I have access to my DNS and Wild cards.

The wild card was activated but it was not finding blogs.

Everytime I made a blog it was just goes to the default page and not to the home page of the blog.

    My hosts told me to deactivate the Wildcards and do the following ;

    Domain : *.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com
    Web alias : diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/blogs/

WPMU is not finding the blogs but if I type the direct path the it's there but the the blog link or backend gives 404 in the admin.

Everything else seems to be in order ?

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

If Mu is in diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/blogs/, have you tried putting in
    *.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/blogs/ ?

In my DNS control panel it only gives me the option (as far as I know)

    anything .diynetwork-homeimprovements.com

    Screen Shot ;

This has been going on for 2 weeks now and I am really at the end, any help will save me from suicide !

    Thanks

So... why is mu installed in the /blogs/ directory?

    I also get a 403 forbidden error when I go to diynetwork-homeimprovements.com

No reason, will it make any difference if I install it just in the root, not so important where its installed ? Just installed in a subdirectory to keep things clean on the server.

What about the wildcard in the apache vhost?

I see no mention of it, but it's quite important.

"will it make any difference if I install it just in the root, not so important where its installed"

Yes, it is *VITALLY* important where it is installed. It is meant to be installed in the root. You're partly having all these issues because it is not. The way it is set up now, even if it *was* working, your blogs would be blogname.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/blogs/.

you've made it ten times harder on yourself trying to do it differently (ie; not according to instructions)

And also, check the Apache httpd.conf file for the wildcard. It absolutely has to be there or it will never work.

Wow, thanks for that info Andrea, I was about to do myself in. I don't have access to the httpd.conf file but my hosts said all rewrite permissions are on so should not be a problem etc.. other clients are using MU on there servers.

In all fairness I have not seen any wording stating "ROOT" which I wonder if a lot of other people have had the same prob.

Will reinstall now and see how I go and let you know how I got on.

    thanks again and well spotted.

Shall I just leave the DNS settings as standard with wild cards switched on do you think ?

You're gonna need to add a ServerAlias line to httpd.conf under your virtual host if you want WPMU to work.

I have made the changes as above, the blog and backend works fine from the admin panel the wild cards are on and working (type anything my domain and it's sent to the defult blog page)

But for some reason the blog is being routed to the default page and not the blog itself (and also from the link in the admin panel.)

    http://test.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com

    If you use ;
    http://test.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/test/

Do I need to point it at a directory or file not just the doamin ?

    Look forward to your reply.

"the wild cards are on and working (type anything my domain and it's sent to the default blog page) "

Nope, still not right. Typing anything at your domain, like http://andrea.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/ should send me to the signup page if it doesn't exist.

I also see you have www showing up in the address. That'll screw you up. Go in the database, do a search and take out the www bit.

"my hosts said all rewrite permissions are on so should not be a problem "
Ask your host a direct question: Is there a wildcard subdomain record in the httpd.conf file? It's not a redirect.

Hi Andrea, I clicked your link and I got the defualt WPMU page ? Is that what your mean ?

And the www. bit ? I think that you are talking about the default setting when doing a install ?

    Thanks again.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I didn't set up a blog because registrations are closed. So, if wildcards are working correctly, I should be able to type in a blog that doesn't exist and get redirected to the signup page, which will then tell me registrations are closed.

that would be the correct behavior, not what your site is doing.

And the www bit - yes, when you install and put in your site URL, you are not supposed to put the www in anywhere.

I have made the changes as you suggested but seem to have a problem with the wild card linking to the sub domain blogs.

The backend, is working fine from the admin although the blog link is doing the same as the above.

    The home domain : http://diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/

My blog with the sub domain : http://freshblog.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/

link to the blog : http://freshblog.diynetwork-homeimprovements.com/my-fresh-blog/
as it won't link from the sub domain.

The wild cards are obviously working but it seems like a routing problem ?

I have set it for anyone to create a blog, might get a better idea of whats going on.

    Thanks again.

what the heck kind of host are you on?

if the wildcards are indeed done correctly, something is still hosed.

If I type in a blog that DOES NOT EXIST, I *should* be directed to the signup page. It still redirects to the main blog. That is *incorrect*.

also "my fresh blog" is listed as a *page* not an actual blog.

You may want to consider paying someone to set it up for you, as at this point nobody here would be able to help without going to your setup and actually *looking* at things on the server.

    here's a start:
    http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=8637

costs would vary depending on who you go with. that's why you ask them. :)

(Personally, I am up to my eyeballs in work.)
