WordPress MU

Okay.. So I'm working for the webmaster at my college, and I'm wondering if WPMU is right for our needs. We want to setup a blog so 50-75 students can run their own blogs. I currently have a Wordpress setup with enough plugins that it accompilshes this, but the plugins were not designed for the big of a user base. With the current installation, a userbase of 50-75 would take quite an effort to set the correct permissions to and all that. What I would rather have is a blog software that would reside in lssu.edu/blog and the users would have lssu.edu/blog/username. Would WPMU accomplish this more efficiently than the normal Wordpress installation??

Thanks, I appreciate it. I've been wracking my mind over how I'm going to accomplish this sucessfully, until I stumbled over WPMU. But then with all the posts about "WPMU isn't for you" and all this I figured I should ask. Thank you!
